Discover the Legacy of Newtown Country Club
Nestled in the heart of Newtown, Connecticut, Newtown Country Club has been a cherished part of the community since 1915. With its challenging 9-hole golf course and welcoming clubhouse, the club offers more than just a place to play—it’s a place where tradition and camaraderie come together.
The club was born in December 1915, thanks to the vision of Newtown’s leading citizens. Two corporations were formed to bring this dream to life: Newtown Country Realty, Inc., which acquired the land, and Newtown Country Club, Inc., to create a vibrant space for enjoying golf and tennis. Originally located on Route 25, the property featured a 9-hole golf course and tennis courts, the latter now part of the paved parking lot.
By 1917, the club had grown to 100 members, with the fairways doubling as a Sunday softball field in the late 1930s. Over the decades, the club evolved with the community—selling its original clubhouse, building a new two-story structure in the 1960s, and overcoming the setback of a devastating fire in 1974 to establish the current clubhouse, complete with a stunning view room added years later.
A Rich History of Iconic Moments
Newtown Country Club’s story is filled with remarkable milestones. Golfing legend Gene Sarazen gave an exhibition here in 1936, and Masters Champion Fred Couples graced the course while attending his caddie Joe Lacava Jr.’s wedding.
Today, Newtown Country Club remains a cornerstone of the town’s heritage and boasts one of the finest 9-hole courses in Connecticut. More than a club, it’s a living piece of Newtown’s history, where every round of golf is a tribute to the generations who built this special place.
